Knitting and Crochet in Books and Movies

I used to be a huge reader before I met my friend new pastime friend yarn. Reading has always brought me joy and still does.  It has ability to transfer me to another place and time at any time. Since I met “yarn” and the “yarnie life” I find I gravitate to books that have knitting and crochet in them. It still has the same ability to bring warm and fuzzy feelings to my soul but, on a different level. I think it does this by providing me with a feeling of community. It allows me to place myself right there within the pages on on the screen,  knitting or crocheting with the characters. I also get inspired by the projects the characters are making, and the yarn they are using described on the pages.

Maybe you are someone, like me, who will even pause the Tv to make your family look at the knitting and crochet happening in the film. Even, snapping photos with the thought of using the colors or searching for a pattern that has the similar look so you can make it later.

There seems to be an extra bit of excitement when it is a holiday book or movie that features yarn for me as well. My husband even has been known to pause a movie or a show for me to point out a actor knitting away on a sweater or crocheting on a scarf. This usually receives groans from our children as they are forced with spending a moment focusing on yarn. However, I love that he notices my love of the crafts and the joys they bring me. I also love that crafts do bring us a sense of community even if that community is a fictional one on screen or in pages.

I was talking about a book I am reading in a recent YouTube live and thought why not open a post where we can share movies and books that focus on the crafts and experience a bit of this joy together…

You can watch that live here.

In Books

I am linking some Christmas themed books, some mystery, and some that are just good reads. These are affiliate links, you can read more about how affiliate links work on my Copyright and Terms page.

There are even an authors who specializes in complete series that circle around the crafts we love. Some of those are linked below but there are a lot more.

One are mystery themed books that involve yarn, knitting and crochet… They are not really Christmas but I have been told are fun reads. All of those on Amazon can be found here and by Molly McRae.

Another series is Blossom Street by the amazing Debbie MaComber and can be seen here on Amazon. I actually own some of her yarn that was made based off this series!

In Tv and Movies

There is often knitting and crochet in movies, and sometimes they get the crafts confused. These two are the two that stand out in my mind. As different ones come to me I will edit this post and add some. Also if you know of know that have people knitting or crocheting in them let us know in the comments.

I know there are tons of movies with knitted or crocheted items in them but I would love this list to focus on the ones that have the act of the arts in them so we can put ourselves on a chair in the room and join in.

I think I have seen this one but I can not remember honestly. It is not really a Christmas themed film but still focuses on a yarn store!

I watched this one a few months ago and I thought it was pretty good. I would be lying if I said I did not tear up a tad, but I also tear up over Publix commercials, lol.

It follows a woman, a castle and a local group of knitters and crocheters!

While Harry Potter is not a typical Christmas movie I can not go a Christmas season without watching it. There is something about the snow, Hogwarts decorated at Christmas in one of the movies and there is always knitting or crochet!

Fueled by Faith, love, coffee and fibery goodness. 🧶

This post made me think back at all of the patterns I have seen in movies and shows. I am the person that pauses and screenshots and tries to track a pattern down. I have made the Katniss Cowl from Hunger games. The blanket from Call the Midwives. I was watching a show on Netflix a few weeks ago I had to pause and rewind because the narrator spoke and said, “…and a woman sits knitting her death shroud not knowing she would soon use it.” paraphrasing. The problem was she was crocheting. I about lost my mind laughing… I looked crazy.

I have a file on my computer devoted to screen shots of knitted and crochet items for the stitch patterns and even their color combos! My husband has gotten to the point where he actually will pause a show and ask if I noticed a knitted item. lol
