About me
Hello friends,
I am so happy you came across my yarn obsessed website. You may have seen my older blog in the past but, I felt I needed a change and new way to connect to each of you. My name is Kim and a I a 42 year old yarn lover and crazy crafting lady.
Let me tell you what brought me to knitting and crochet and below, I hop you tell me what got you to them as well.
My Story
I have been married to my soul mate since 2006. We met at work on 2000 and began dating in 2004 and I feel in love with him and his family. Then on April 20th, 2014, we were on the phone with his mom as she was telling us her location on the interstate as she had a flat tire. That conversation would change the rest of our lives and his parents.
Another driver, who was driving recklessly swerved and hit her going 85 miles an hour! The sound of metal, her screams and the shattering of the glass will forever be embedded into my mind. My husband took off to her and I began dialing 911. The force of the impact pushed my mother in laws head through the air bag and causing it to hit the steering wheel. This caused damage and swelling in her brain which set in motion early onset Alzheimer’s.
This set us on a new path as a family and a new role for me to fill. During the beginning stages of recovery I began researching ways to help her work on her memory to slow the state that was coming and came across the studies done on repetitive motions such as knitting and crochet and what it does for memory and in combatting brain diseases.
I knew my mother in law knew both because she is Austrian and those crafts had been a part of her life since she was a little girl even though I never saw her with yarn or tools in her hands. The first step for me was to learn so I could encourage her to get back into them which would allow her to use them as her disease progressed… and so I did.
On December 2012 I got my first Red Heart yarn and crochet Boye I Taught Myself to Crochet Hook Set and taught myself to crochet while being sick with the flu. Then, just a few days later, I found Ravelry and signed up on one of the biggest websites for knitters and crocheters ever.
Since then I have used Ravelry to track all my yarns, projects and my pattern stash. I have really tried to embrace both knitting and crochet and to learn all that I can from all the amazing teachers/designers out there. I want to enhance my skills and terminology so I can assist others whom I come in contact with along my journey.
Among being a crafter I am also a stay at home mom and we homeschool our children. Our decision to homeschool is actually also related to the same incident that brought me to knitting and crocheting. The ability to be able to be close to my mother in law in case I am needed and to be able to care for her was really hard while trying to balance two kids in public school. Being a homeschool family does have a lot of benefits but it also can be some what time consuming. The
In closing
I knew I wanted to start this blog to track my journey and to encourage others. I know I am not the only one or the first to find myself in a similar role of a caretaker. This blog is an extension of my passion for yarn, knitting, crochet and everything that in between that allows me to create and hopefully inspire you in some way. This blog will also be a home base for my YouTube channel, which I upload to often!
On occasion, I even have some live shows so we can sit back, chat and craft together! If you are looking for another way to connect then please join my Facebook Group.
